Heartburn is a burning sensation and pain in the stomach and chest, radiating to throat and neck. Also known as acid reflux (or GERD when it becomes chronic), hearburn is one of the most common health problems faced by many. This is more common in pregnant women. Heartburn is the result of the formation of stomach acid.  Heartburn is caused when hydrochloric acid, which is use to digest food, is release up the esophagus, which irritates the sensitive tissues in the esophagus and throat, giving rise to a burning sensation and then pain in the chest. However heartburn is not to be confused with heart attack. It is always better to take preventive measures against heartburn. This is because, if left un-treated the repeated flow of acid through the esophagus can cause cancer later in life. A number of antacids tablets are available OTC for acidity but it is always better to try some home remedies before opting for medicines. The best thing about this remedy is that it is very convenient and can be done anywhere and any time. One of the main cause of heartburn is reduced saliva production. The most important thing that chewing gum does is release of saliva in the mouth. Chewing helps in digestion. The act of chewing stimulate brain areas which then go on to active digestive processes in the stomach. Also prolonged gum chewing acts as a nociceptive suppressant.
